Northeastern Urban Award for Non-Traditional Students

Deadline: 13 Feb. 2023

Students are invited to apply for a grant designed to help defray the cost of participating in the GSA Northeastern Section meeting. Students who work full-time, care for dependents, or are otherwise considered non-traditional may request up to $1000 which can be applied to such expenses as: dependent care, meeting registration, abstract fees, GSA membership for two years, and lost wages (if applicable) to attend the section meeting. Preference will be given to students in the NE section and those presenting papers, but students from other sections may apply.

The application requires a letter of recommendation by a faculty member. GSA does not accept letters of recommendation submitted by applicants, please have your recommender submit it directly.

Kenneth N. Weaver Student Travel Grants

The Northeastern Section has travel funds available for students presenting at either the regional NE Section Meeting or the national GSA Annual Meeting.

To be considered for a travel grant, the student must:

  • be a student member of GSA (join now);
  • be registered for the meeting before applying for a travel grant;
  • be enrolled in an institution within the Northeastern Section (see boundaries);
  • must be the author or co-author, and be present during the oral or poster presentation;
  • complete online Travel Grant Application Form for the current Section meeting or annual meeting (go to Students & ECPs page); and
  • use the grant for travel expenses to that meeting.

Grant recipients must attend the meeting and pick up their registration badge on-site. Payments are sent after the meeting. If you don't attend the meeting and pick up your badge, no payment will be sent.

Notification of grant status will be made prior to the cancellation deadline, so if your attendance is dependent on receipt of a travel grant and you do not receive it, you may obtain a full registration refund.

Stephen G. Pollock Undergraduate Student Research Grants

Proposal Deadline: 15 March

The Northeastern Section offers grants to support individual research by undergraduates attending colleges and universities within geographic boundaries of the Northeastern Section. Students should have the objective of presenting the results of their research at a Northeastern Section or Annual GSA meeting. The maximum funding allotment is $1,500 per proposal.

Students and applications must meet the following criteria:

  • The student must be enrolled at an institution within the Northeastern Section [see boundaries]
  • The student must be a student member of GSA.

  • If more than one application is submitted from one department, the Chair of the department must rank the proposals.
  • Funds may not be used for salaries and stipends and funding may be requested for only one year at a time. Students may submit proposals in two consecutive years, even if funded previously.
  • The online application must be completed during the application period of 15 January to 15 March.  Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by mid-April with funds being mailed to successful applicants by the end of April.
  • Funded students are expected to expend the funds as stated in the proposal; return any unexpended funds to the Section Secretary; and submit a 1 page maximum written report of the research and disposition of funds to the Section Secretary within three months of completion of the project.

The proposal should follow this sequence

  1. Complete the online application.
    (Download sample application/worksheet).
  2. Proposal narrative.
    This will include the purpose and significance of the proposal research, and the methods employed to complete the research. (Recommended length of the narrative is 1-2 pages).  Upload to the online application in the Project Upload area (PDF or Word only).
  3. Itemized budget.
    Please include information on all additional sources of funding for the project, including previous and pending sources of funding. Upload to the online application in the Budget Upload area (PDF or Word only).
  4. Your project supervisor will be contacted requesting they complete a recommendation form in the online application system. Please make sure your supervisor is aware that they must do this in order for your proposal to be considered.

The deadline for all proposals is 15 March.
