Description: This short course will introduce processes and techniques to evaluate and characterize carbonate and siliclastic depositional systems with respect to oil and gas, groundwater, and carbon capture and storage applications. The workshop will be held at the Stewart Core Research Facility.

Description: Technology can be a powerful tool in geoscience education and outreach, but development and implementation can be challenging. This workshop will introduce examples of technology-based instructional techniques, including virtual field trips, augmented reality, gamification, and the use of real-world data, aimed at increasing student engagement, retention, and recruitment.

Description: This workshop aims to introduce participants to the most commonly used geophysical techniques in near-surface geophysics and their applications to geological, hydrogeological, engineering, and environmental problems. Participants will get hands-on experience using gravity, magnetic, electric resistivity, seismic refraction, multi-channel analysis of surface waves, and ground penetrating radar.

Description: This will be an introduction to direct push sensor technologies that are available to map unconsolidated lithology and subsurface contaminants including NAPL fuels and oils, petroleum and chlorinated VOCs and ionic contaminants. The sensors allow users to create high resolution site characterization maps and 3D models of lithologic features and contaminant plumes which identify source areas, migration pathways and contaminant storage zones. The data is then commonly used to improve site remediation plans, target sampling zones and monitoring well placement..

Description: Metagenomic data predict a huge unknown diversity of methane producing microbes. This workshop will be “hands on,” culturing methanogenic archaea and bacteria producing the methane in the sediment of Lightning Lake, Oklahoma. We will master anaerobic culturing techniques in the lab and discuss the basics and limitations of culture-dependent work.

Description: This short course will be to teach participants technical and environmental aspects of petroleum produced water characterization, treatment, and disposal into subsurface. Technical aspects will include chemical characterization methods and treatment technologies. Environmental aspects will include risk assessment of fresh groundwater contamination with common contaminants present in petroleum produced water.

Description: This course covers the fundamentals of geologic CO₂ storage in saline formations and mature oil and gas reservoirs. Participants will learn how to analyze geologic carbon sinks and to proceed from initial assessment through commercial development using examples of programs from the southeastern and south-central United States.
