Categories & Eligibility

PROFESSIONAL

Professional Geologists. This includes college- and university-level instructors.

Any one or more of these eligibility requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in geology or a related field (i.e., any physical or biological sciences, or other disciplines such as engineering, or geography)
  • Equivalent training through practical experience
  • Employment in geological work
  • Teaching geology at the college level (join as a K-12 Teacher if you teach at the non-college level)

After 25 years of membership and age 65, professional members move to Senior Member/Fellow status, entitling them to reduced dues. After 30 years of membership and age 70, dues and Division memberships are waived for life.

EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONAL

Graduated with a degree in geology or related science with terminal (hightest) degree within the past five years, and not planning to re-enter an academic program.

STUDENT

Minimum eligibility requirement:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student enrolled and majoring in geology or a related science.

A related science is any physical or biological science or other discipline such as engineering or geography.

TEACHER MEMBER

Does not include college- or university-level instructors.

Minimum eligibility requirement:

  • Currently employed as a teacher at an elementary or secondary-level institution

AFFILIATE

Interested person with no degree in geology or related field.

Minimum eligibility requirement:

  • Must be neither professionally trained nor employed in geology or a related field (i.e., any physical and biological sciences or other disciplines such as engineering, geography, or anthropology) related to geoscience, nor currently studying such science at the collegiate level.
  • Not currently studying such science a the collegiate level.
