Physical Scientist (Quality Assurance Specialist), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

The USGS Eastern Energy Resources Science Center (EERSC) in Reston, Virginia is soliciting interest from qualified individuals for a Physical Scientist or Chemist to serve as a Quality Assurance Specialist (QA Specialist) to implement, maintain, and manage a comprehensive program-wide Quality Management System (QMS) in EERSC Research Laboratories. The successful incumbent is (1) recognized as an expert in research laboratory quality assurance, (2) provides professional expertise and experience to successfully coordinate, promulgate, and maintain QMS policies and programmatic- and laboratory-specific standard operating procedures, and (3) guides the deployment of all quality assurance processes and methods to ensure the validity, quality, integrity, reproducibility, and traceability of data in a research laboratory. Additionally, the QA Specialist provides day-to-day support and training for laboratory analysts and personnel regarding QMS requirements; works with Laboratory Managers on the documentation, monitoring, and proper use of analytical equipment; ensures and validates data integrity and quality assurance processes as they relate to petroleum research and performs root cause analysis, pre-audits, proficiency testing, and/or resolves corrective actions as needed to maintain the highest technical standards and scientific excellence in the EERSC research laboratories. The successful candidate serves as a knowledgeable resource and experienced liaison on QMS-related matters between laboratory personnel, Laboratory Managers, the QMS Manager, and Science Center Management. The expertise and objectives of this position are critical to the successful operation of a research laboratory and production of high-quality, documented, and defensible analytical results in the Energy Resources Program.

This is a full-time permanent position (Physical Scientist (Quality Assurance Specialist, GS-1301-GS-12/13 with a salary range of $77,490 (GS 12 Step 01) to $119,794 (GS 13 Step 10) depending upon qualifications and experience.
