GSA Division Research Grants
These GSA divisions award grants for outstanding student research within the respective division's field of interest.
Archaeological Geology
- Claude C. Albritton, Jr. Award
Provides research scholarships and fellowships for graduate students in the earth sciences or archaeology. - Richard Hay Student Paper/Poster Award
Travel grant awarded to a student presenting a paper or poster at the GSA's annual meeting.
Coal Geology
- Antoinette Lierman Medlin Scholarship
Presented for the completion of laboratory/analytical research and for the completion of fieldwork for graduate students studying coal science.
Engineering Geology
- Roy J. Shlemon Meeting Awards
Given to graduate and undergraduate students to encourage participation in field trips and short courses held at annual and sectional meetings. - Roy J. Shlemon Scholarship Awards
Given to graduate students with the best research proposals within the broad field of engineering geology.
Geobiology and Geomicrobiology
- Best Student Poster Awards
Geology and Society
- Best Student Presentation Awards
History of Geology
- History of Geology Student Award
Solicits proposals for a student award (undergraduate or graduate) for a paper to be given at the annual GSA meeting.
Limnogeology
- Kerry Kelts Award
Offered to two students researching limnogeology related topics. Contact the division Chair for more information.
Planetary Geology
- The Eugene M. Shoemaker Impact Cratering Award
For undergraduate or graduate students, of any nationality, working in any country, in the disciplines of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, astronomy, or biology. - Stephen E. Dwornik Student Research Paper Award
Given for the best student presentations (one each for poster and oral) at the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC). - Pellas-Ryder Best Student Paper Award
Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology
- J. Hoover Mackin and Arthur D. Howard Awards
Support graduate research in Quaternary geology or geomorphology (Mackin for PhD students and Howard for M.S. students). - Marie Morisawa Award
Supports graduate research in Quaternary geology or geomorphology for female applicants of either the M.S. or Ph.D level.
The Committee on Research Grants will select candidates from the general research grant program for awards by the Geophysics (Allan V. Cox Award), Hydrogeology, Sedimentary Geology, and Structural Geology and Tectonics Divisions.
The Geoinformatics, Geoscience Education, and International Divisions do not currently award grants for student research.
