Michel T. Halbouty Distinguished Lecturer
The GSA Foundation is pleased to have established the Michel T. Halbouty Distinguished Lecturer Fund. The intent of the fund is
to provide an honorarium for a Halbouty Distinguished Lecturer at GSA annual meetings.
The fund was established to select a top lecturer in broad, overarching
topics of natural resources (water, land, energy, and minerals). Selection of
the lecturer will be on the basis of career accomplishments and reputation, as
well as the topic of the lecture.
Nomination Guidelines
Self nominations will not be considered. Nominations should concisely summarize
the accomplishments and research field of a nominee. All nominees for this award must have submitted an abstract for the GSA Annual Meeting in Denver by the abstracts submission deadline
of 10 July 2007. The winner of this award will present their regular scheduled talk, plus an hour-long presentation which can be scheduled separately
or may be part of a Topical Session. The check for $2,000 will be presented to
the awardee at the annual meeting.
A review panel consisting of members from JTPC will vote on the candidates.
The winner of this award will be notified in mid-August.
Appropriate topics could include, but are not limited to:
- finite limits on worldwide availability;
- regional overviews (U.S.) of availability, quality, quantity, and use;
- environmental damage from extraction or exploitation;
- geologic aspects of environmental remediation;
- overarching government policies concerning natural resources;
- regional exploration; and
- new exploration tools.
Papers of the usual sorts, such as one concerning a particular ore deposit
model, a local water quality problem, or the discovery of a new gas field may
not be appropriate. The subject needs to be a broad one.
