Geology at Every Scale
2018 Meeting of The Geological Society of America's Southeastern Section
Boulder, Colo., USA: Geoscientists from the southeastern U.S. and beyond will convene in Knoxville, Tennessee, on 12-13 April to discuss hot-topic science, expand on current findings, and explore the region's unique geologic features. This event is expected to draw more than 750 attendees from a variety of geoscience and environmental disciplines.
Keynote speaker: Dr. Robert M. Hazen (Carnegie Institute for Science) will speak on "The Co-Evolution of the Geosphere and Biosphere: A 'Big Data' Approach."
The meeting also includes several field trips described in the GSA Field Guide, Geology at Every Scale: Field Excursions for the 2018 GSA Southeastern Section Meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee, edited by Annette Summers Engel and Robert D. Hatcher Jr. The chapters in this interesting guidebook are organized according to major geologic themes, starting with field trips in the Knoxville area that highlight, in some way, local carbonates, and then ending with field trips focused on regional tectonics that include travel to the Carolinas and Georgia.
A pre-meeting field trip will cover "The Blue Ridge Basement Complex of the Eastern Great Smoky Mountains: New Insight into Old Rocks from U-Pb Geochronology." A post-meeting trip will be a "Geotraverse from the Great Smoky Thrust to the Inner Piedmont: Upper Crust to Lower Crust, Terranes, Large Faults, and Sutures."
Also of interest at the meeting is the undergraduate research poster session, which received more than 70 abstract submissions. These posters will be presented each morning and afternoon during the meeting.

Eligibility for media registration is as follows:
• Working press representing bona fide, recognized news media with a press card, letter, or business card from the publication.

Present media credentials to William Cox onsite at the GSA registration desk to obtain a badge for media access. Complimentary meeting registration covers attendance at all technical sessions and access to the exhibit hall. Journalists and PIOs must pay regular fees for paid luncheons and any short courses or field trips in which they participate. Representatives of the business side of news media, publishing houses, and for-profit corporations must register at the main registration desk and pay the appropriate fees.
