Premeeting

  1. Evaporites and Lamproites: A Geological Tour of the CertainTeed Gypsum Mine and the Crater of Diamonds State Park Diatreme

    The first stop is Certain Teed Gypsum mine in Howard County where we will examine the gypsum beds and overlying units, all within the Trinity Group (Cretaceous). From this site we will return to Murfreesboro and visit the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Then to a guided tour of the collecting field to view rock types and discuss relationships of various units. Afterwards, the group will be allowed unsupervised time to visit outcrops, hold discussions, visit the Park museum and Diamond Discovery Center, the gift shop, and hunt for diamonds. Sample collecting is allowed in the Park, so bring collecting bags, markers, tools, etc. Cost includes Lunch, Park Entrance fee, and bus. Bottled water and soft drinks will be provided for lunch and to carry with you into the Park field area. Bring your own snacks for morning and afternoon.

  2. Fayetteville Shale Gas Play

    The trip will tour an active Fayetteville Shale drill site that is operated by SEECO, a subsidiary of Southwestern Energy. A SEECO drilling supervisor will provide an overview of the horizontal drilling operation and the “slickwater” hydraulic stimulation procedures. We will continue northward to various outcrop sites in the Leslie, and Snowball areas. During the field stops, the AGS will provide a geologic overview of the region with a focus on upper Mississippian stratigraphy and the internal stratigraphy of the Fayetteville Shale. After the last field stop is completed, the vans will proceed southward to the Market Place Grill for supper located in Conway, Arkansas. (Each field trip participant is responsible for his or her own meal). When supper is completed, the vans will return to the original departure location at the AGS office in Little Rock (approximately 7 pm). Roundtrip mileage is approximately 300 miles. Cost includes transportation, guidebook, a sack lunch, snacks and drinks. Cost for the evening meal is not included in the field trip fee and will be the responsibility of each participant.

    These trips depart from the Hot Springs Convention Center at 11:30 a.m. We will view some of the geologic hazards and geology along Central Avenue in downtown Hot Springs. This trip is free. Lunch will be on your own.
