Geoscientists Meet Next Week in Saratoga Springs; Public Forum on Hudson River Clean-Up Monday Evening

Information for Science and Environment Writers

Approximately 700 scientists, students, and K-12 educators will gather 14-16 March for the 40th annual meeting of the Northeastern Section of the Geological Society of America. The meeting takes place at the Prime Hotel and Conference Center in Saratoga Springs, New York. Hosts for the meeting are the Geology Departments of Union College, Schenectady, New York, and Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs.

The meeting covers a wide variety of geoscience topics, with a total of 358 presentations of ongoing research centered largely in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada.

A free public forum titled "Dredging PCBs from the Hudson River: Progress and Prospects" takes place Monday evening, 14 March, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Alabama Ballroom. Media and the general public are encouraged to attend. Featured speakers are Richard Bopp, Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI); John G. Haggard, Engineering Project Manager at the General Electric Company; and David H. King, Director of the Albany EPA Field Office. The forum will be moderated by Jean Neubeck of Alpha Geoscience.

Also on Monday evening, an informal "map blast" session takes place from 7:00-9:30 p.m. in the Whitney Ballroom. New geologic maps of all sorts are posted and informally discussed by the geologists and students who made them. Journalists and others are welcome to view the maps and ask questions.

Journalists are also invited to attend scientific sessions of interest, interview scientists, and visit the exhibit area. To view the technical program, please visit http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2005NE/finalprogram/.
