General Chair

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I welcome you to Charlotte and the Southeast! We are excited about the 2012 GSA Annual Meeting and hope you will benefit from the wide array of symposia, topical sessions, field trips, short courses, exhibits, and other activities that have been planned for this meeting. And of course we encourage you to experience the many attractions that the city and region have to offer. The meeting website provides a link to a variety of local attractions and restaurants you might find of interest and includes a walking tour of building stones in uptown Charlotte (see www.geosociety.org/meetings/2012/area.htm).

It has been an honor to serve as the General Chair of the Local Organizing Committee. The task has been made easy by the sterling efforts of all the members of the organizing committee. Yeoman service was provided by Dick Berg, Technical Program Chair; Missy Eppes and Jerry Bartholomew, Field Trip Chairs; Jake Armour, Randy Bechtel, and Eric Pyle, K–12 Education Chairs; Andy Bobyarchick, Special Sessions and Short Course Chair; and Ken Taylor, John Bender, and Scott Hippensteel, Special Events and Community Education Chairs. Thanks also go to the GSA Divisions for organizing and sponsoring many of the compelling symposia and topical sessions that comprise the backbone of this meeting.

Special thanks go to Melissa Cummiskey and the rest of the GSA staff for all of their work. They were a constant source of encouragement and ideas for planning the meeting. Their vast knowledge and experience ensured that the planning went smoothly, and we owe them a great deal of thanks for the quality of this and every GSA meeting.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the Southeast and that you will return soon and often to experience the delightful range of geology, landscapes, culture, cuisine, and hospitality that the region has to offer.
Come to Charlotte in November! You will be most welcome!
