Geofacets Adds KMZ Downloads
In addition to TIFF, JPEG, and GeoTIFF file formats, Geofacets now offers KMZ figure file downloads for all content published since 2000. Now you can search for content by geographic area; refine your search according to map type, map scale, publication, keywords, and more; and then import your results directly into Google Earth. This 3-minute video provides an example of rapidly overlaying a seismic survey map on top of borehole location data. GSA members can subscribe by contacting .

GSA History and Philosophy of Geology Division Student Award
There is still time to submit a paper for this award. The winner receives $1000 following the presentation of her/his research at the 2014 GSA meeting in Vancouver, BC. The award is open to ALL students, regardless of discipline. The paper should relate to the history or philosophy of a geological idea, person, or topic. Faculty advisors may be listed as a second author. Please submit your paper by 15 June.

    Two May 2014 Geology articles, "Discovery of mafic impact melt in the center of the Vredefort dome: Archetype for continental residua of early Earth cratering?" by C.L. Cupelli et al. and "Impact spherules from Karelia, Russia: Possible ejecta from the 2.02 Ga Vredefort impact event" by M.S. Huber et al. are detailed in a 28 Apr. LiveScience post. The LiveScience article was subsequently picked up and redistributed in Scientific American on 29 Apr. and Mother Nature News and Huff Post Science on 30 Apr.

    GSA Bulletin science by J.M. Sinton et al., "Ka'ena Volcano — A precursor volcano of the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i," published online 2 May 2014, was covered by Scientific American on 19 May, and on 16 May by LiveScience. The LiveScience article was picked up and redistributed on 17 May by Fox News, Discovery News, and Yahoo! News.

    Geology science, "Preserved flora and organics in impact melt breccias," by P.H. Schultz et al. (published online on 15 Apr. 2014), which received earlier coverage by BBC News, The Christian Science Monitor, and Discovery News, is also covered in a 21 Apr. International Business Times article and in a brief story by New Scientist on 24 Apr.

    The Geology article, "A record of sustained prehistoric and historic land use from the Cahokia region, Illinois, USA," by S.E. Munoz et al. (published online on 10 Apr. 2014), is detailed in a 24 Apr. LiveScience post, which was picked up and redistributed on 25 Apr. by Discovery News.

    "Volcanoes of the passive margin: The youngest magmatic event in eastern North America," by S.E. Mazza et al., published online in Geology on 10 April 2014, is discussed in a 29 Apr. LiveScience article, which was picked up and resdistributed by Fox News on 30 Apr.

    The April/May GSA Today science article by E.H. Parker Jr., "Crustal magnetism, tectonic inheritance, and continental rifting in the southeastern United States," which received early coverage by LiveScience and LaRed 21 Mundo, is detailed in a 22 Apr. Discovery News post (which was redistributed by Fox News).
