Conducting cave inventories and assessments at the Monongahela National Forest (West Virginia); hunting for Jurassic dinosaur fossils at the BLM Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area (Colorado) — these are just two examples of the ~100 paid, short-term geoscience opportunities offered for summer 2014 through GSA's GeoCorps program. Washington, D.C., 21 Nov.: A coalition of geoscience organizations, including GSA, co-hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill aimed at enhancing policymakers' understanding of the geoscience that supports the country’s energy production and innovation. The Energy from the Earth briefing series brings geoscientists to Washington each month to highlight vital geoscience information needed for effective policy decisions about energy issues.

Fossil Supervolcano Highlighted in new UNESCO GeoPark
From the Phys.org article: "It is a rare event that geology is a catalyst of public cooperation and celebration," says geologist and volcano expert James E. Quick. The new Sesia-Val Grande GeoPark is an example of just that, says Quick, whose international team in 2009 discovered a fossil supervolcano that now sits at the heart of the new GeoPark.

Best et al., "The 36–18 Ma Central Nevada ignimbrite field and calderas, Great Basin, USA: Multicyclic super-eruptions," was picked up by United Press International (UPI) and Science 2.0 on 11 Dec. and is also illustrated in an 11 Dec. GA Daily News (Georgia, USA) article, which was picked up by the New York Post on 12 Dec.

The Geology article by B.A. Black et al., "Acid rain and ozone depletion from pulsed Siberian Traps magmatism," posted ahead of print on 22 Nov., is covered in a 22 Nov. UPI article.

UPI also covered the Geology article by J.P. Briner et al., "Amino acid ratios in reworked marine bivalve shells constrain Greenland Ice Sheet history during the Holocene," which was posted ahead of print on 22 Nov. (UPI: 22 Nov.; picked up by Yahoo!News Canada on 23 Nov.).
